Flames tore through a dwelling on the 2400 block of South 57th Street Monday afternoon, destroying a life and endangering another.

The smoke detectors inside the one-story dwelling did not have batteries and the cause of the blaze that killed a woman and injured her daughter was an electrical appliance, Fire Chief Daniel Williams said. Citing HIPAA laws, Williams would not release names or ages, but said the adult died from her injuries at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania after the blaze that started shortly after 5:30 p.m. and the girl was at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia with severe injuries.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke on the first floor. During a search, firefighters found the woman and her child and immediately administered medical treatment by paramedics and transported to the aforementioned hospitals.

The blaze was under control at 5:47 p.m. No other units on the block were affected and there were no other injuries.

Victim follows shots

No sooner did police in the area of Greenway Avenue and 72nd Street hear a couple of gunshots than a man got out of a car and informed them he had been wounded.

The cops were on patrol at about 5 p.m. Oct. 9 when they spotted a maroon SUV traveling south on 72nd, a report said. The driver then told police he had been shot in the right arm. Medic 19 transported the wounded 44-year-old to Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in stable condition.

The victim was unable to provide police with a description of the shooter or from where the shots came, but investigators found ballistics evidence in the rear of a dwelling on the 7200 block of Greenway.

Pregnant teen injured

A neighborhood teen allegedly picked up a BB gun and used it against a 16-year-old pregnant girl when she refused to have relations with him.

The victim, who was shot once in the chest, went via medic to HUP in stable condition. The Special Victims Unit also was notified of the 6:35 p.m. Monday incident on the 7100 block of Saybrook Avenue and an investigation continues, a report said.

Charged with using unusual weapon

Police arrested a 26-year-old after he allegedly brandished a machete at a 31-year-old during an altercation on the 6600 block of Paschall Avenue.

During the spat, the suspect allegedly swiped the victim’s $200 cell phone then pulled the weapon from a rear pants pocket before lunging at the man, a report said.

Joel Garcia, from the 2200 block of Shield Street, was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, possession of an instrument of crime and recklessly endangering another person after the 3:15 a.m. Sunday incident.

Scared off

When a man’s live-in girlfriend heard him scream on their front porch, she switched on a light and scared off her man’s would-be muggers.

The victim was on his front steps at about 4:50 a.m. Friday when two unarmed males approached him from behind and told him not to move, a report said. One began reaching around to the 45-year-old’s waistband when the victim yelled for his girlfriend.

Described as black males, about 5-foot-8 with thin builds and wearing black hoodies, the pair took off on foot towards Cobbs Creek Parkway.

To report information, call Southwest Detective Division at 215-686-3183.

Open house

A 40-year-old awoke Monday to find her front- and backdoor ajar and a basement cabinet’s drawers open but nothing taken.

The victim was asleep upstairs in the dwelling on the 6500 block of Windsor Avenue when she woke up at about 7 p.m. and went downstairs to discover the scene, despite having locked the doors, a report said.

Police were not able to find any signs of forced entry.
