A New Jersey man spent his birthday in prison after allegedly knocking out a police officer with a chair in Point Breeze.

Police responded to the 1200 block of South Bonsall Street at 9:57 p.m. April 29 to investigate a person screaming, Officer Tanya Little of the Police Public Affairs Unit said. Kenneth Bryant, of East Orange, N.J., who turned 38 May 3, and a 34-year-old woman were engaged in a verbal altercation inside a home on the block that could be heard from outside.

Police entered the dwelling and separated the duo, but Bryant allegedly continued to confront the woman, so police asked him to leave, Little said. Bryant allegedly grabbed a chair and swung it at one of the officers, striking the left side of her head and face and knocking her unconscious. She was transported to the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania for head injuries, treated and released that night.

Bryant allegedly resisted arrest, so the officers subdued him, Little said.

He was charged with aggravated assault, possession of an instrument of crime, terroristic threats, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and resisting arrest, according to court records. As of press time, he had not posted bail, which was set at $150,000 April 30.
