Thanks to area residents’ tips, the U.S. Marshals Service captured an alleged rapist Monday.

Tipsters pointed investigators to an area behind Devon Self Storage, 12 E. Oregon Ave., where Anthony Chestnut, 36, was allegedly living in a 5-by-30-foot metal tube. He was arrested at 9:30 a.m. without incident, U.S. Marshals Supervisor James Burke said.

“It looks like he was living on the street,” Burke said. “He had a makeshift bed. Some of his belongings were inside a metal tube. It looks like he was living there.”

The marshals had just missed Chestnut when a tip led them to the 2300 block of South Alder Street Friday, Burke said.

Chestnut, of the 2500 block of South Sheridan Street, allegedly assaulted a 5-year-old girl on the 900 block of Winton Street July 8.

Chestnut was charged with rape, unlawful contact with a minor, aggravated indecent assault, statutory sexual assault, sexual assault, incest, endangering the welfare of a child, corruption of a minor, indecent assault, indecent exposure, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.
