No matter where one’s culinary allegiance lies, establishments charge themselves with ensuring that diehards and novices will have a plethora of delicious dishes from which to choose. Italian eateries have long enjoyed favor in South Philly, but other cultures have grown competitive, with Johnny Chang’s, 2601 S. Broad St., emerging as this year’s top ethnic restaurant (non-Italian).
“Our chef makes great food with fresh ingredients, and delivery is prompt,” co-owner Cindy Xie said of what helps the eight-year-old Lower Moyamensing location to thrive. “It makes us very happy to have the recognition.”
Offering Chinese and Japanese selections since its inception, Johnny Chang’s has wowed taste buds with numerous homages to its Asian heritage, with Xie, who shares duties with seven-year manager David Lin, noting that house special rolls, rice noodle options, dumplings and sweet and sour chicken head customers’ cravings list. With a very popular dine-in section, too, the spot has helped to create many memorable family outings and dates for local residents.
“The way we prepare our food is usually healthier than other places’ methods,” Xie said.
With this being the Year of the Horse within Chinese astrology, perhaps it is fitting that Johnny Chang’s galloped past the competition. For Xie, the victory marks more proof of the destination’s dedication to quality meals.
“Thank you for this,” she said. “We’re here to serve you.”
JC Chinese steamed in to finish in second place, while Cantina Los Caballitos spiced up third.
