Angelo Dundee

Besides being former world champions, Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard share another common bond — Dundee. The late-East Passyunk Crossing product, who once called the 800 block of Morris Street home, had a knack for transforming pugilists into champions, training 15 of them to be exact. Inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992, this South Philadelphia High alumnus, who passed away in 2012 at the age of 90, devoted more than six decades to the fight game.

With South Philadelphia having a long list of made-it-big pugilists who went on to become world champions, one may question how the former Angelo Mirena knocked the others off the list. Well, when you’re talking about the man responsible for molding “The Greatest of All Time” into a world champion, further elaboration is no longer needed.
