A West Philly man was arrested for killing a South of South man inside his apartment and stashing the body in the closet.

John M. Smallwood, 33, of the 6000 block of Irving Street, has been charged with murder, possession of an instrument of crime and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. Smallwood allegedly stabbed Shawn Andrews, 41, inside his apartment on the 700 block of South 19th Street following a dispute, Officer Tanya Little of the Police Public Affairs Unit said. Police discovered the victim at 4:31 p.m. March 24 inside his bedroom closet. Authorities pronounced him dead at 5:12 p.m.

Police brought Smallwood in for questioning at the department’s headquarters, 750 Race St., and then placed him under arrest at 10 a.m. March 28, Little said.

He was held without bail in county jail at press time, according to court records.
