A meaty return

When Anthony Lombardi picks up the phone at Lombardi’s Prime Meats, 1801 Packer Ave., there is no need for phone introductions or order specifications. It’s that family-friendly touch that has earned the Packer Park-based business a repeat appearance as the Readers’ Choice for butcher.

“We are very honored,” Anthony Lombardi, who opened the current location in 2001, said. “We try to provide a consistent, friendly service and offer the highest quality of meats that you can buy.”

Saturdays, which Anthony said is like “two days combined into one,” tend to be the craziest.

The chicken cutlets with the homemade breadcrumbs are one of the biggest sellers. Today the business that Vince Lombardi started in 1960 continues to provide customers with a variety of tasty offerings. Seventeen years later, he purchased a space at 20th and Jackson streets, and opened Al’s Meat Market. After Anthony branched out with his own operation, the family consolidated the business. The entire staff remains passionate about the day-to-day routine, which includes sharing plenty of laughs.

“I think we have fun in here,” Anthony Lombardi said. “The phone will ring, and I know who they are. It’s a very specialized occupation.”

Dad’s Stuffing took a slice of second while Canulli’s Quality Meats and Poultry packed a third-place standing.
