The 98th Philadelphia Police Hero Plaque was unveiled yesterday.
Philadelphia Police Detective George L. Williams was shot and killed in a gun battle with five men while attempting to make an arrest inside a saloon at 16th and South streets Jan. 9, 1918, according to the Police Public Affairs Unit. The plaque will rest at the intersection where he was slain 93 years ago.
The then-44-year-old was a 12-year veteran on the force. The department’s first African-American detective also was a star of the Negro Baseball League’s Cuban Giants.
The main offender, Samuel Cole, was executed at the age of 22 Nov. 1, ’20.
