After firing shots from her apartment balcony, an area woman committed suicide Sunday afternoon.
Neighbors had heard several gunshots before police responded to the 2600 block of South 12th Street for a person with a gun at 4:23 p.m., Officer Christine O’Brien of the Police Public Affairs said. Officers detected a shot fired inside the second-floor apartment before a 33-year-old woman walked out onto the rear balcony. They advised her to drop the gun, but she reentered the residence and another shot went off.
SWAT arrived and were unable to make contact with the woman, O’Brien said. With the use of cameras, SWAT members determined she was deceased and entered the apartment. With a bullet to her head, she was pronounced dead at 5:57 p.m.
