A Center City man was arrested for stabbing someone outside of a Pennsport convenience store.

A 48-year-old was waiting for AAA after locking his keys in his car at 2:45 a.m. June 14 in the parking lot outside of Wawa, 1602 S. Columbus Blvd., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said.

William Howlett, who was allegedly panhandling outside of the store, is believed to have walked up to the stranded man multiple times, Tolliver said. During a verbal argument between the two, Howlett, 56, of the 1200 block of Race Street, allegedly pulled out a small box cutter with a red handle and started to slash the man’s face and chest before stealing the man’s cane.

A 27-year-old off-duty security officer sprayed Howlett with pepper spray and demanded he stop. Howlett supposedly obliged, tossed the cane and headed west toward Water Street.

Police arrested Howlett, who was charged with aggravated and simple assaults, possession of an instrument of crime and recklessly endangering another person, outside of the store.

The victim was transported in stable condition to HUP where he received treatment for multiple lacerations.
