A driver and his passenger escaped harm’s way when bullets came flying at their auto in Newbold Monday.

A school police officer surveying the area heard gunshots at 2:51 p.m. on the 1500 block of West Passyunk Avenue and saw a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix flee the scene, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said.

Police spotted the vehicle with bullet holes in the passenger’s side door heading south on the 2200 block of South 24th Street and pulled it over at 24th and Wolf streets, Tolliver said.

The 23-year-old operator of the car and his 25-year-old passenger were in the vehicle at a red light at 16th Street and West Passyunk Avenue when the pair heard the gunshots and dove out of the driver’s side door after the driver’s side window shattered, Tolliver said.

Neither occupant was injured nor did they see the shooter or shooters.

They hopped back in the car and were en route to the 1st Police District, 2301 S. 24th St., when officers pulled the vehicle over. A witness had seen the car fleeing the scene.

Detectives recovered ballistics evidence at the scene, but the motive was unknown at press time.
