South Philly is blessed with a variety of excellent high schools and its correspondingly excellent athletic programs. The Saints of Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., have competed against the best of the city and even the state, winning championships and turning out promising college prospects, making the school’s athletic program have the top team in the eyes of this year’s Readers’ Choice voters.

“It makes me very proud to know that our community recognizes and appreciates what we’re doing as a Catholic institution,” Saints’ Athletic Director Pat DiPilla said while enjoying a playoff game at South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Broad St.

DiPilla, along with the rest of the packed gymnasium, was about to watch the Neumann-Goretti girls’ and boys’ basketball teams compete for their respective City titles. Though the girls fell short in their hard-fought battle, the boys emerged victorious and added yet another accolade to their season, which already has seen them claim their fourth-consecutive Catholic League title.

DiPilla stresses the significance of all sports as they contribute to the overall excellence of his Neumann-Goretti athletic program, which is primarily recognized as a basketball and baseball school.

“The overall theme is involvement,” he said. “No matter what, we want you involved. That’s why they call us the Neumann-Goretti family.”

The Girard Academic Music Program Pioneers scored second while the Edward W. Bok Technical High School Wildcats and the Southern Rams played into a tie for third.
