Last year, Readers’ Choice voters thought that best hair/nail salon should be a category on the list. With the addition to the ballot, Headhunters Hair Design took the win for the best salon in South Philly.

Change can be a little scary, but it’s usually for the better, Nancy Melchiore, owner of Headhunters, 1718 E. Passyunk Ave., said.

“I walk in everyday excepting the girls to change something up, for example, but the changes are beneficial to both the salon and the customers,” Melchiore said.

Headhunters itself is a product of change as Melchiore bought the salon from a previous owner 15 years ago.

“I had another place, Cheekers for Hair at 1500 E. Passyunk, but we bought this one and remodeled everything.” Melchiore said of the current location.

Headhunters delivers traditional salon services, such as haircuts, coloring, styling, perms, relaxers and makeup application, to a wide range of customers.

Stylists, Amanda Maratea and Lauren Averill agree that the customers at Headhunters vary drastically.

“We accommodate everyone,” Maratea said. “We have kids to 90-year-old customers. New people from the neighborhood to people who’ve lived here for years. We have all types of different people really.”

And Melchiore attributes this to the atmosphere at Headhunters.

“We offer a relaxed but professional setting,” Melchiore said.

Cutting Point Hair Designs and Violet Salon won second and third place respectively.
