Old-school reflections

To the Editor:

I love all things associated with nostalgia, and I always have, going to thrift stores long before they became the popular consignment shops of today. I feel that it gives me a chance to visit past eras of fashion and music that only a throwback like myself could appreciate. Vintage memorabilia has always been very interesting to me, and I seem to be partial to the 1940s and ’50s because the time seemed simpler and the styles were very classy.

I love looking at old time photos and watching documentaries of the past to witness how every generation has evolved, but I grew up in the crazy phase of disco, which is a back-in-the-day era that seems to be staying quite current. I must admit that I am in somewhat of a time warp where the ’70s are concerned, so I do love seeing the fringe vests, bell bottoms and platform shoes, and I’m sure it is only a matter of time before we see the boombox blaring once again, big hair and Members Only jackets making a long-awaited comeback. Even though I feel that some things are better left in the past, with the concept of history repeating itself, any form of nostalgia, no matter how silly it may seem, is feasible. But may I please state for the record, to the many who listen and dance to the music that is now considered oldies, and wear the fashion that is now referred to as retro, never forget, we listened to it, danced to it and wore it first.

In order to appreciate fully the sweet insanity of the ’70s, I guess you just had to be there! There is nothing old about an era that refuses to die, continues to reinvent itself, demanding to remain forever young and accepting nothing less. But while you’re out there kickin’ it old school, just remember, we were the old school who kicked it first!
