Cold comfort

In 1932 Filippo “Pop” Italiano started selling an authentic Italian summer treat from a cart in his South Philadelphia neighborhood. The “Italian ice” gained popularity and Pop’s has become a favorite place to get “water ice” in South Philadelphia at its 1337 W. Oregon Ave. location. Pop’s is also right across the street from Marconi Park, this year’s Readers’ Choice winner for park, making it easy for tired or overheated kids and parents to go for a quick cool down.

“Pop” died in 1987, leaving the business to be run by three of his grandchildren. Linda Raffa is the current owner and the oldest of Pop’s three grandchildren. Pop’s originally served only five flavors, lemon, pineapple, cherry, chocolate and pina colada, but has since expanded its flavors to appeal to more customers.

Italiano’s looked sweet in second place, while John’s chilled in third.
