For more than a century, Lerro Candy Co., 2434 S. Broad St., has been based in the same Broad Street building that Giovanni Lerro started in back in 1916. The handmade chocolate has drawn a consistent loyal following and kept the family-run business a somewhat hidden Philadelphia treasure. Three generations later, Giovanni Lerro’s grandson, John Lerro, continues to run the family business successfully with his mother, Carmella Lerro.

In the business’ humble beginnings, they also served ice cream but have shifted focus to their main chocolate and candy products because of supermarket ice cream popularity and accessibility. Although the candymaking has been moved out from the back of the store, the quality of the chocolate has not changed.

The small candy company has specialized in-made-to-order chocolates and other delicious snacks served to their ever-expanding group of patrons around the city. The time and attention that the Lerro family puts into all of its products can be measured by loyal fans who voted them the best chocolate in South Philadelphia.

“We are grateful for each of our customers, their loyalty keeps us going,” John Lerro said.

Anthony’s wrapped up a second-place finish, with Favors and Flavors skimming third.
