With respect to establishing durable bonds, Ed Mooney need not fret that he is an only child, as he deems his teammates on the St. Joseph’s Preparatory School football squad his brothers. Thanks to his efforts in helping his substitute siblings to score the last two Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AAAA titles, locals have lauded him as the top high school/college athlete from South Philly .

“Coach [Gabe] Infante tells us to look for our source when we’re out there, so I play for everyone around me,” the resident of the 200 block of Wolf Street said of assisting the Haws’ ascension. “Putting in the hard work and being there everday, that’s what has made us to successful lately.”

The junior center has always valued vanquishing obstacles as a part of a solid core, with time at his North Philly-situated institution enhancing his mentality. Though group merit matters far more to him, observers have noticed his dedication, evident in his All-Catholic distinction.

“It’s great to be a part of such a committed culture at The Prep,” the Whitman inhabitant said of the program, which has also claimed the last two Class AAAA Catholic and City crowns. “I’m looking to encourage our younger guys to become more appreciative of that.”

Looking to become a more vocal leader, Mooney easily summoned the words to reflect on his honor, modestly noting he finds a few others more worthy.

“I’m grateful, though,” he said. “There are many talented athletes down here.”

Whitman resident Alynn Phelan, a lacrosse and basketball star for John W. Hallahan High School, had double the fun in second place, with Neumann-Goretti product and baseball star Michael Riverso, who graduated last year from Widener University, swinging for the fences in third.
