Remembering a contributor

On Oct. 16, Joan Iaconelli, a former South Philly Review columnist, died at the age of 61 in her home on 15th and Ritner streets. She was a regular contributor to the publication over the years through her column “Slices.” She is survived by her mother Josephine, her brother John, as well as her two children Blase (Danielle) and Joshua (Michele). She was also an aunt and a grandmother.

“She was a warm person, and when you saw her you’d think she was 20 years younger than she actually was,” Gene Maiale, her neighbor of 40 years said.

He said that she had been suffering from heart and kidney problems, and was found in her home when she was supposed to be picked up for a kidney treatment. The funeral service occurred Monday morning, with her burial occurring at New St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bellmawr, N.J. Donations in her memory can be made to the Women’s Humane Society.
