Fire forces relocation

A Hawthorne school became a reception center for fire victims last week.

Around 3 a.m. May 1, residents of the 2300 lock of Naudain Street in Center City noticed a gas smell, with crews detecting high carbon monoxide readings throughout the thoroughfare. Philadelphia Gas Works employees attempted to locate the source after their evacuation, with an undetermined agent igniting an explosion at one home.

Roughly two hours later, Philadelphia Fire Department personnel extinguished the three-alarm event, which had spread to three other residences. Authorities confirmed that nobody perished, and the American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania stated that 30 people reported to The Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts, 901 S. Broad St., with two dogs and as many cats receiving assistance from Red Paw.
