Police arrested a North Philly man for his alleged attempt to rob an ATM in Bella Vista.

At 5:07 a.m. Sunday, authorities learned through a radio call that someone was breaking into the money holder at the PNC Bank, 801 Christian St., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. They observed the damaged item but found no offender on location.

Using a flash description from the site’s security operator, they began to search for an older male wearing a baseball cap, a red hoodie and torn jeans, details that matched the garments of a man they had seen earlier in the area of the 900 block of Christian Street. They surveyed the neighborhood, Tolliver said, and found the figure leaving a nearby doughnut shop. After contacting the operator to see if he could identify the individual, they arrested 66-year-old Luis Rodriguez and charged him with criminal mischief and two counts of attempted theft. Video footage also showed him allegedly smashing the ATM with a cinder block or small concrete slab to gain entry.
