He’s No. 1

Two years ago when people mentioned the name Nick Foles, the immediate response would’ve likely been “who?” At the time, he was an unproven 6-foot-6 rookie quarterback out of the University of Arizona that the Philadelphia Eagles selected in the third round. Like many newcomers, the athlete who wears the No. 9 jersey had to earn his starting spot. When he finally did during the 2013 season, his strong following of fans took notice and named Foles their favorite Philly pro athlete.

It might be his offseason, but we were still able to track down the rising NFL star who was appreciative of the recognition.

“It’s an honor that I really cherish because it’s voted on by the Philadelphia community,” he said. “The fact that the readers thought enough of me to pencil my name in for this award is very humbling. In just two years here, I feel like I’ve already established a strong bond with Philadelphia and its fans. I want them to be proud of me and this team, so I go out and leave everything on the field for them.”

Foles earned a spot in the Pro Bowl after leading all NFL passers in quarterback rating (119.2), yards per pass attempt (9.1) and touchdown percentage (8.5). His strong individual numbers helped the Eagles capture the NFC East crown. Besides enjoying that winning feeling, Foles seems to be really getting into a comfort zone with his hometown fans.

“I am very thankful to play in Philadelphia because, to me, it’s the greatest sports town in the world. The way the fans of this city rally around us through thick and thin, in season and out, is simply amazing,” Foles said. “The sports atmosphere is so unique and unlike any other I’ve experienced. I’m extremely proud to play for this city.”

Phillies veteran Chase Utley secured his familiar position at second while teammate Cole Hamels placed a healthy third.
