While Amber Long and her mother walked along the 900 block of North Front Street at 10:35 p.m. Sunday, two unknown men approached them behind, with the first snatching the matriarch’s purse and the other encountering resistance as he tried to nab the handbag of the 17th-and-Ritner-streets resident, Lt. John Stanford, of the Philadelphia Police Department’s Office of Media Relations, said. The momentarily-deterred figure shot Long once in the chest and grabbed the item containing $40, with both offenders fleeing northbound on Front Street in a black Impala.

Following transport to Hahnemann Hospital, Long, who worked for a Center City architectural firm, died at 11:15 that night. Authorities revealed they had taken two men of interest into custody Monday night and are hoping to make an arrest soon, Homicide Unit Capt. James Clark said. The City of Philadelphia is offering a $20,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of anyone in the homicide.
