A retail theft turned violent when a Queen Village convenience store employee confronted the Northeast Philly man.

The 26-year-old worker allegedly observed William Sullivan, 41, of Northeast Philly, steal a carton of cigarettes from 7-Eleven, 841 S. Second St., at 9:41 p.m. June 12 and confronted him in an alley behind the store, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Sullivan then is believed to have said he had a knife and began to swing his arm at the employee, cutting his uniform shirt and scratching the right side of his stomach before fleeing on a red bicycle.

The victim did not seek medical attention, Tolliver said.

Police spotted Sullivan at Morris and Water streets 15 minutes later and arrested him, Tolliver said.

He was charged with robbery, aggravated assault, simple assault, retail theft, possession of an instrument of crime and recklessly endangering another person.
