A Point Breeze man will serve up to six years in prison for a burglary spree that affected 11 South Philly homes.
Sheldon Moss, 28, of the 1900 block of Tasker Street, pled guilty to eight counts of burglary, three counts of attempted burglary and one count of conspiracy of burglary. Although Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth Kotchian asked for six to 12 years in prison, Court of Common Pleas Judge Donna Woelpper gave him three to six years behind bars plus eight years on probation and ordered him to pay more than $20,000 in restitution May 13.
“I asked for a lengthier sentence but I think the judge took into consideration the fact that he’s young and the motive for his crimes seemed to be a drug addiction,” Kotchian said.
Of the 11 crimes that happened overnight June 7 to Aug. 19, 2012, six, including his three attempted break-ins, occurred in Pennsport; two took place in Passyunk Square; and one happened in Bella Vista, Grays Ferry and South of South.
Investigators traced a stolen phone from the June 9, ’12 burglary on the 100 block of Ellsworth to 10th Street and Washington Avenue where some of the victim’s credit cards were recovered. Latent evidence revealed a match Aug. 27, ’12, which led to his Sept. 5, ’12 arrest when officers found him hiding in a closet inside his home.
Moss has 17 prior arrests, according to authorities. His first arrest was in 1999 when he was 14.
