Pennsport native McElhenney, 36, has served as writer, producer, director, actor and creator for his hit comedy TV show, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” whose ninth season will air this fall.

McElhenney, who hailed from Moyamensing Avenue and Dickinson Street before his family relocated to Delaware County, moved to New York City at age 18 where he found work in commercials, small roles in TV shows and movies, such as “The Devil’s Own” and “Wonder Boys” before making the leap to Los Angeles six years later.

On the west coast he was a waiter when he penned the script for what would become “Always Sunny.” He cast three of his real-life friends, including his now-wife, Kaitlin Olsen, and taped his creations on two camcorders. FX approved the premise of the show, which follows the group who owns and operates Paddy’s Irish Pub, but requested he change the setting from L.A. Each summer the cast and crew travels back to his hometown to shoot exterior shots for each season.
