A man pled guilty to shooting his girlfriend eight times in front of her Grays Ferry home.

Bernard Gause, who previously spent time in prison for various assaults and firearm violations since the late-1990s, will return to prison after agreeing to a plea deal landing him behind bars for five to 10 years plus five years on probation, according to court records. He pled guilty to two counts of simple assault, as well as a count of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm and contempt of violation of order.

Gause, 35, of North Philly, went to his ex-girlfriend’s home on the 1300 block of South Hollywood Street, while the 30-year-old was not home at 12:20 a.m. Sept. 8, 2012, police said. Her 11-year-old baby sitter alerted the woman he was at the door, but she told her not to let him in. Upon returning home an hour later, she parked her car, but he pulled up next to her, blocking her from exiting the vehicle and asked about getting his family back.

When the woman’s new boyfriend exited the home, he pulled out a handgun, police said. Upon his return inside the home, he pointed at the woman and fired continuously from two feet away even after the gun emptied. She was wounded four times in her lower back, three times in her right arm and once in the left side of her chest, but survived the ordeal.
