On April 24, 2003, Phillies’ second baseman Chase Utley became an instant fan favorite with a grand slam, the first hit of his career.

Since his rookie season, Utley has been a key member of the Phillies’ success as well as a catalyst in the team’s first World Series championship title in 28 years. The career .288 hitter not only has been voted to five All-Star games but also has earned the title as South Philly’s favorite current Philly pro athlete.

Utley also has been active off the baseball diamond. Along with wife Jen Utley, he has created the Utley Foundation to bring awareness to the epidemic of animal cruelty.

The Southern California native has been known to have a love for Philly and its fans. Despite struggling with knee injuries, Utley continues to enjoy a prosperous career as the Phillies’ second baseman. With opening day less than a month away, the good news for the Readers’ Choice voters is that it looks as if Utley is ready to start the season on a healthy note.

Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels delivered in second, while its first baseman Ryan Howard batted third in the standings.
