Double crime

After a 15-year-old was fatally stabbed on the 1900 block of Passyunk Avenue Monday night, police made two arrests — one for murder, the other for robbery.

Police found Angel Evans, 15, from the 2300 block of South Bonsall Street, on the 1300 block of Mifflin Street at 9:20 p.m. He was pronounced dead at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital at 10:30 p.m., said Homicide Capt. Michael Costello.

The captain remained tight-lipped about the investigation and would only say a prior robbery occurred, then a confrontation ensued in which Evans was stabbed. Costello would not confirm whether Evans was the robber or a robbery victim. Nor would he confirm if there were four to five teens involved in the altercation, as one high-ranking police source told the Review.

But, according to that source, Evans was the one who tried to pull off the robbery with the other suspect. And the person charged with murder was the target of that robbery, that same source said.

A witness told police four men chased down Evans and began punching him. One of the men had a knife, according to the high-ranking police source.

Crystal Webber, 22, from the 2000 block of Dorrance Street, was charged with robbery and Nicholas Baggio, 17, from the 2100 block South 13th Street, was charged with murder, Costello said.

The captain said he was confident there would be no more arrests in Evans’ slaying, but possibly more for the robbery.

Two wounded in shooting

Three different caliber firearms might have been used in a double shooting that left one teen critical and another in stable condition, police said.

Investigators recovered a 9mm Glock with 12 rounds, a .380-caliber handgun with nine rounds and seven .45-caliber spent casings at the scene, Detective Joe Chiaro of South Detective Division said.

Several males opened fire on the teens at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday on the 1800 block of South 21st Street, critically wounding a 19-year-old in the chest, as well as a 17-year-old in the left shoulder, said the detective. Both were taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Teen shot, friends arrested

After a 15-year-old was shot early Friday on the 1600 block of Taney Street, four of his associates were charged with narcotics and weapons offenses, police said. The arrests were for an unrelated incident on the block, said Sgt. Tim Cooney of South Detectives.

Seventeenth District Officer Paul Hogue, on Safe Streets beat patrol in the area, heard gunshots at about 1 a.m. When he rounded the corner onto the 1600 block of Taney, he observed the shot teen and four males stuffing guns and narcotics into a residential mailbox, the sergeant said.

Originally, police thought the teens were involved in the shooting, but an investigation cleared them, Cooney said.

Knowledge Brown and Maurice Martin, both 18 and both of the 1600 block of Taney, and two 17-year-olds were charged with weapons, narcotics offenses and conspiracy, police said. At the scene, police recovered two guns, a .380 caliber and a .45 caliber, along with vials of crack cocaine, the sergeant said.

The victim, who lives on the block where he was fired upon, was taken to HUP in stable condition with two gunshots wounds to the abdomen.

The Mobile Crime Scene Unit, who processed the scene, recovered .380 casings at the scene.

When the 28-year-old screamed, the men took off, police said.

The incident happened Sept. 14 at about 2:40 a.m. on the 2300 block of Grays Ferry Avenue, said Detective Joe Chiaro of South Detectives.

Bank robbed

The FBI is requesting the public’s help in nabbing a man who tried to rob PNC Bank, 230 S. Broad St., Monday.

The bandit entered the bank at about 9:20 a.m. and waited for a teller, said Special Agent Jerri Williams.

The offender handed the teller a demand note indicating he wanted an envelope filled with money and that he had a gun, Williams said.

After obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash, the robber fled.
