Slain in Point Breeze

Two men were critically shot with a West Passyunk man becoming the first South Philly homicide fatality of 2011.

Police were called to the 1500 block of South Garnet Street for a shooting at 3:27 p.m. Sunday when they discovered Paul Berry, 31, of the 2000 block of South 24th Street, and another 31-year-old man were wounded, Officer Tanya Little of the Police Public Affairs Unit said.

Berry, who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and groin, was transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in critical condition, and was pronounced dead about 25 minutes later, Little said. The other man received several wounds to both of his legs and was transported to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in critical condition.

Police did not have any suspects or a motive as of press time, according to Little and Homicide Sgt. Frank Hayes.
