A traffic violation resulted in the arrest of the car’s Point Breeze passenger after he allegedly took the wheel and sped off.
The passenger of a vehicle, whose driver committed a traffic violation, was arrested for fleeing police officers as well as firearm violations and narcotics possession after a pursuit through South of South.
17th District police were patrolling the area when officers spotted a white Pontiac Grand Prix drive through a red light near 24th and Christian streets, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. As sirens blared and lights flashed from the police vehicle, the car turned on to 24th Street and continued two blocks to Washington Avenue until pulling over.
Upon stopping, a 23-year-old woman, who was behind the wheel, exited the vehicle, Tolliver said. Tysheed Davis, 20, of the 2200 block of Wharton Street, who was in the passenger seat, allegedly used one hand to push the gas pedal while steering with the other even after police ordered he exit the car. First, he is believed to have reversed into a police car and then drove forward forcing an officer to leap out of the way before the car struck another police automobile.
Leaving the damaged police wagons behind, Davis allegedly moved to the driver’s seat and fled the area, Tolliver said. With officers in pursuit, Davis is believed to have crashed on the 1500 block of 21st Street, exited the car and fled on foot. Police struggled with Davis for a short time before arresting and transporting him to Methodist Hospital for unspecified injuries.
Police recovered a loaded Smith & Wesson revolver and multiple narcotic packets on Davis, as well as a loaded sawed-off shotgun with an obliterated serial number from the passenger’s side of the car that was towed to a police lot, Tolliver said.
