A man’s auto was carjacked and subsequently crashed as he helped his mother carry groceries into her Bella Vista house Saturday morning.

The 48-year-old left his 2008 Mercedes-Benz E320’s engine running in a parking lot on the 700 block of Christian Street as he carried bags to his mother’s home, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said.

Upon returning, he walked toward the driver’s side door when an unknown man pushed him out of the way, hopped inside and sped out of the lot, turning eastbound on Christian and striking a car in the westbound lane. He continued east, but lost control and crashed into a parked 1996 Chevy Corsica. The driver fled eastbound on foot.

A medic transported the auto’s owner to Pennsylvania Hospital for cuts and abrasions to his arms and legs resulting from the fall, Tolliver said. No other injuries were listed and the damages to each vehicle were not available at press time.

The offender was described as white, age 32, 5-foot-10, thin and wearing a brown jacket and blue jeans.
