Seven officers were honored for valor, 34 for bravery and 19 for heroism whereas one civilian received the Medal of Excellence at a Dec. 7 ceremony at the Fraternal Order of Police headquarters.

In the 17th District, officers Steven Olivieri and Joseph Marrero were recognized with Bravery Awards and Officer Michael Collins was given a Heroism Award while 3rd District Officer Dennis Clair also received a Bravery Award.

Clair earned his honor as a result of a Sept. 19 arrest in Dickinson Narrows. He and his partner were working in plain clothes when they tried to stop a trio that matched the descriptions of men responsible for an earlier robbery at Eighth and Morris streets.

The officers identified themselves at 1:09 a.m. when Jameel Thomas, then age 18, allegedly ran north on the 1800 block of South Fifth Street. While his partner waited with the other two men, Clair pursued Thomas in his vehicle north on Fifth and west on Moore when Thomas allegedly fired a shot that missed Clair, who then chased Thomas on foot to a backyard of a home on the 500 block of Moore Street where he witnessed Thomas discard the loaded .32 caliber revolver and arrested him.

Thomas, now age 19, pled guilty to aggravated assault and possession of a firearm April 18 and will serve four to 10 years in prison.
